Lonza's Visp expansion adds 3 multiproduct suites at up to 1200 L plus 500-L single-use capacity to scale commercial ADC production from 2028.

Lonza announced on October 29, 2026, a further expansion of its bioconjugation manufacturing network in Visp, Switzerland, to support growing demand for antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and other bioconjugates.¹ The contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) will upgrade existing mid-scale suites with 500-L single-use capacity by 2027. It will also add 3 multiproduct suites to a previously announced large-scale facility expected to be operational from 2028.¹

Key facts

  • Company: Lonza
  • Site: Visp, Switzerland
  • Mid-scale upgrade: 500-L single-use bioconjugation suites by 2027
  • Large-scale addition: 3 multiproduct suites, up to 1200 L
  • Large-scale timing: operational from 2028
  • Products: cytotoxic and noncytotoxic ADCs and bioconjugates
  • Formats: stainless-steel and single-use manufacturing
  • Related investment: Visp payload-linker capacity expansion (announced June 2026)

"As more ADCs and other bioconjugates advance towards commercialization, customers need confidence that manufacturing capacity can grow with their programs," said Christian Seufert, head of advanced synthesis at Lonza, in a company press release.¹

What is Lonza adding in Visp?

The investments fall into 2 complementary parts. First, Lonza is converting existing mid-scale bioconjugation suites into a standardized single-use platform with 500-L capacity.¹ The upgrade is scheduled for completion in 2027. It will add single-use equipment, chromatography capabilities, and parallel manufacturing capacity to support faster campaign changeovers, more flexible planning, and a broader range of ADC and bioconjugate programs.¹

Second, the new large-scale bioconjugation facility under construction at the Visp complex will include 3 multiproduct suites for cytotoxic and noncytotoxic products.¹ The suites will offer stainless-steel and single-use manufacturing at scales of up to 1200 L, with capacity expected to be operational from 2028 to support high-throughput commercial supply.¹

How does the expansion fit Lonza's ADC network?

The bioconjugation investments build on other recent ADC-related capacity additions at the site. In June 2026, Lonza announced plans to expand payload-linker manufacturing capacity in Visp. The expansion will establish commercial-scale capabilities for highly potent molecules in an existing good manufacturing practice facility, also expected to be operational in 2028.² At the time, the company described an integrated ADC offering that spans monoclonal antibody manufacture, conjugation, and drug product manufacturing at its Visp and Stein, Switzerland, sites.²

Why is ADC manufacturing demand rising?

Lonza attributed the expansion to the growing number of ADCs and other bioconjugates progressing through clinical development toward commercialization.¹ That pipeline has been visible in recent late-stage data, including programs built on newer formats such as bispecific ADCs.

At the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress, SystImmune and Bristol Myers Squibb reported phase 3 PANKU-Lung01 results for izalontamab brengitecan (iza-bren), a dual-targeting epidermal growth factor receptor × human epidermal growth factor receptor 3 (EGFRxHER3) bispecific ADC. In previously treated EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer, it extended median progression-free survival (PFS) to 11.1 months vs 5.7 months with platinum-based chemotherapy.³ Merck and Kelun-Biotech reported phase 3 TroFuse-005 results for the TROP2-directed ADC sacituzumab tirumotecan. In pretreated endometrial cancer, that candidate extended median overall survival to 19.0 months vs 12.1 months with chemotherapy (hazard ratio, 0.68).⁴ FDA has accepted a biologics license application for that indication under priority review.⁴

In addition, GSK licensor Hansoh Pharmaceutical reported that the B7-H3-targeted ADC risvutatug rezetecan (Ris-Rez) extended median PFS to 5.5 months vs 1.4 months with chemotherapy in the phase 3 ARTEMIS-011 trial in relapsed osteosarcoma in China.⁵ Not every readout has been clear-cut, however. BioNTech and DualityBio said their HER2-directed ADC trastuzumab pamirtecan met its PFS primary endpoint in the phase 3 DYNASTY-Breast02 trial in hormone receptor-positive/HER2-low metastatic breast cancer. The companies described the improvement as modest, with limited potential benefit to patients.⁶

As candidates like these move toward potential approval, their sponsors will need commercial-scale conjugation capacity, the type of capacity Lonza's Visp expansion is designed to provide.

What are the limitations?

The new large-scale capacity is not expected to be operational until 2028, and construction and qualification timelines can shift. Lonza did not disclose the investment amount, customer commitments, or projected output. Demand for ADC capacity depends on clinical and regulatory outcomes for individual programs, which remain uncertain.
