Shilpa CDMO announced on November 3, 2026, that it is investing $50 million to expand peptide manufacturing at its Unit-I campus in Raichur, Karnataka, India, citing accelerating demand for glucagon-like peptide-1s (GLP-1s) and more complex peptide therapeutics.¹ The phased investment will add 10 kL of solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) reactor capacity over the next few years. It begins with a commercial manufacturing line scheduled to open in December 2026.¹
Key facts
- Company: Shilpa CDMO (Shilpa Pharma Lifesciences)
- Investment: $50 million, phased over the next few years
- Site: Unit-I campus, Raichur, Karnataka, India
- Added capacity: 10 kL of SPPS reactor capacity
- First commercial line: opens December 2026 (500-L and 1000-L reactors)
- Line output: up to 1 metric ton per year
- Total lines: 6 parallel cGMP lines when complete
- Synthesis routes: SPPS, LPPS, and hybrid
- Focus: GLP-1s and complex peptides, including conjugates and radioligand peptides
"Peptides are becoming one of the most important areas of pharmaceutical development, but the opportunity goes well beyond current GLP-1 demand,” said Keshav Bhutada, CEO of Shilpa CDMO, in a company press release.¹ “Innovator pipelines in oncology and rare diseases are producing increasingly sophisticated molecules and conjugates that require much greater expertise in route design, synthesis, purification and scale-up."
What capacity is Shilpa CDMO adding?
The new commercial line will join 3 existing clinical-phase manufacturing lines at the Raichur Unit-I campus, with commercial supply ramping up through 2027.¹ It features 500-L and 1000-L reactors in a single block, supporting annual production of up to 1 metric ton.¹ Purification includes a pair of 2-m dynamic axial compression (DAC) columns with a 10,000-L/h preparative high-performance liquid chromatography system. The line also has 1000-L/h nanofiltration and a 1000-L lyophilizer.¹
The company plans to add further 2-kL, 3-kL, and 5-kL SPPS reactors, which it said will establish one of the largest multi-ton peptide capacities in India.¹ The expanded operation will comprise 6 parallel current good manufacturing practice lines, allowing multiple programs to run independently. One of those lines is dedicated to cytotoxic peptide manufacturing using SPPS.¹
The facility will use a centralized distributed control system with integrated process analytical technology and UV monitoring. Design of experiments and process simulation will be used to set operating parameters ahead of scale-up and technology transfer.¹
