The Bend, Oregon, CDMO is building a greenfield commercial facility, due in 3Q 2027, that will add OEB4 spray drying, nano-milling, and finished-dose capabilities for oral and inhaled products.

Serán Bioscience, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) in Bend, Oregon, is expanding into commercial-scale particle engineering and finished-dose manufacturing with a new greenfield facility on track for completion in the third quarter of 2027.¹ The company announced on Sept. 29, 2026, that the expansion is supported by a growth investment led by Biospring Partners. Existing investors Vivo Capital and Bain Capital Life Sciences continued to participate, as did Serán's executive leadership.¹ The release did not disclose the size of the investment.

"The company has an outstanding track record of quality and speed, and the team is widely recognized as a scientific and operational leader in spray drying."

What will the new facility do?

The multi-suite commercial facility is designed to support OEB4 manufacturing for oral, pulmonary, and other delivery modalities. Its particle engineering capabilities will include commercial-scale spray drying and nano-milling.¹

The facility will also provide finished-dose capabilities, including granulation, tableting, coating, encapsulation, and specialized dry powder filling for inhalation products, for both immediate-release and modified-release profiles.¹ It will integrate with Serán's recently completed adjacent packaging and logistics facility, which provides validated packaging, labeling, unit-level serialization, and global cold-chain distribution.¹ Together, the buildings will form an integrated campus of more than 200,000 sq ft in Bend. Serán currently has more than 200 employees, more than 150 of whom are scientists and engineers. It plans to hire as many as 150 additional employees as the commercial expansion progresses.¹

Why is Serán expanding now?

Serán said the expansion is a direct response to client demand for particle engineering, finished-dose manufacturing, and end-to-end commercial supply. The company said it is broadening its services to support clients from early development through commercial supply.¹

"This investment is a significant milestone in Serán's evolution as we rapidly scale our clinical manufacturing operations to support launches of new medicines, as well as serve new clients seeking a state-of-the-art commercial manufacturing partner," said Dan Smithey, co-founder and chief executive officer of Serán.¹

Socrates Zacharias, a principal at Biospring Partners, tied the investment to demand for spray drying in oral drug development. "As the industry develops increasingly complex oral drugs, we're seeing growing demand for spray drying capabilities," Zacharias said. "Serán is exceptionally well-positioned to help pharma and biotech companies bring these therapies to patients."¹

What does the move mean for Serán's clinical-to-commercial model?

Serán has built its business on development, analytical, and clinical manufacturing services. According to the company, its expertise covers spray drying, melt extrusion, fluid bed processing, granulation, and solid dosage forms. Its personnel have experience in process engineering, scale-up, product launches, and commercial manufacturing.¹

The new facility extends those services into commercial manufacturing. "With the invaluable backing of Biospring Partners, alongside our long-standing partners at Bain Capital and Vivo Capital, we are well-positioned to complete our greenfield commercial facility on schedule and deliver seamless, life-changing therapies from early-phase discovery through commercial launch," Smithey said.¹

Gaurav Aggarwal, a managing partner at Vivo Capital, said the commercial expansion had been planned for years. "We are now realizing the vision we laid out years ago with Dan of adding commercial capabilities to create a true end-to-end offering," Aggarwal said.¹

Who is backing the expansion?

Serán's investors include Biospring Partners, a healthcare growth buyout firm founded in 2020; Vivo Capital, a healthcare investment firm with approximately $5.8 billion in assets under management, and Bain Capital Life Sciences, a life sciences investment firm founded in 2016, backing biopharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostic, and life science tool companies.¹

Serán expects to complete the commercial facility in the third quarter of 2027, with hiring scaling as the expansion progresses.¹
