FAQ: What FDA’s Individualized Gene Editing Draft Guidance Means for Developers

FDA’s draft framework would let sponsors add patient-specific genome editing variants to an approved BLA using in vitro data. Here is what the guidance proposes, what evidence it asks for, and what remains unresolved.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed a regulatory framework that would allow sponsors to include multiple patient-specific variants of a genome editing (GE) product in a single biologics license application (BLA). Issued by the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) on October 27, 2026, the draft guidance, Individualized Human Genome Editing Products: Considerations for BLA Submission and Postapproval Management, describes how sponsors could establish boundaries for product variation and use in vitro evidence to support additional variants after approval.
