How does this deal fit into Samsung Biologics' broader growth strategy?

This is not the first large, confidentially-structured European manufacturing agreement Samsung Biologics has disclosed. In January 2025, the company signed a similarly structured contract worth more than $1.4 billion with an undisclosed Europe-based pharmaceutical company, also for production at Songdo and running through December 2030.³ Samsung Biologics currently operates 845 kL of global manufacturing capacity, with 785 kL concentrated across its Bio Campus I and II sites in South Korea and 60 kL at its Rockville, Maryland facility.⁴ Samsung Biologics acquired the Rockville site from GSK in a transaction announced in December 2025 and expected to close by the end of Q1 2026, marking the company's first planned US manufacturing presence; the reported capacity totals suggest that transaction has since closed, though I have not independently confirmed a closing date beyond that expectation.⁴

The company has also been diversifying beyond its traditional antibody manufacturing base. In July 2026, Samsung Biologics announced an all-cash offer worth approximately $1.8 billion to acquire PolyPeptide Group, a Swiss CDMO specializing in peptide- and oligonucleotide-based active pharmaceutical ingredients, a move intended to expand its capabilities into peptide therapeutics, including GLP-1 medicines.⁵ Samsung Biologics has also built out dedicated antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) manufacturing capabilities, with an ADC-specific facility beginning operations in March 2025.⁶

Why does Samsung Biologics' shift toward complex molecules matter?

Samsung Biologics has pointed to a broader shift in its customer pipeline toward more structurally complex biologics. Kasper Øland, the company's vice president of sales execution, told BioPharm International in an interview at the 2026 BIO International Convention that complex molecules — including bispecific and multispecific antibodies and ADCs — now represent more than 55% of Samsung Biologics' customer pipeline, surpassing conventional monoclonal antibodies as the dominant modality.⁷ Øland described the shift in CDMO expectations that comes with that complexity: "It's about getting started as soon as possible and managing the risks," framing speed-to-market not as a technical mystery but as the result of applying tailored development platforms to the right molecule at the right stage.⁷ He also noted that tighter venture capital funding conditions have compressed IND timelines industry-wide and reduced biotech companies' tolerance for development risk, pushing them to expect CDMOs to function less like vendors and more like an extension of their own operational teams.⁷

Samsung Biologics said demand for long-term manufacturing capacity remains strong across its network, and the company continues to evaluate future capacity investments in line with market demand and evolving client needs.² The PolyPeptide acquisition's tender offer period is expected to run from September 15 through October 12, 2026, with Samsung Biologics aiming to complete the transaction by the end of 2026.⁵
