China Approval of Ecnoglutide Expands Competition in the GLP-1 Obesity Market

China’s approval of ecnoglutide injection for chronic weight management marks a significant regulatory milestone for Hangzhou-based Sciwind Biosciences (Sciwind) and signals intensifying competition in the global glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapy market. The company announced on March 6, 2026 that the drug received approval from the National Medical Products Administration for use in adults with overweight or obesity, expanding its clinical role beyond its earlier approval for type 2 diabetes in China.¹

Ecnoglutide, originally discovered and developed by Sciwind, a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company, is described as the first approved cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-biased GLP-1 receptor agonist for weight management. The therapy leverages selective cAMP signaling to enhance metabolic effects while reducing receptor desensitization. According to the company, the drug has demonstrated consistent efficacy across clinical studies, with average placebo-adjusted weight loss of 15.1% in Chinese patients and more than 92% achieving clinically meaningful weight reduction.¹

The March approval builds on Sciwind’s earlier regulatory progress in China, where ecnoglutide received authorization in January 2026 for glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.² That approval positioned the therapy as the first long-acting cAMP-biased GLP-1 receptor agonist to reach the market, introducing a new signaling approach within a drug class already central to modern metabolic disease treatment.

While the therapy’s initial launch will focus on China, the broader market implications extend beyond the country’s borders. Dr. Hai said at the time of the collaboration announcement that the companies aim to integrate Sciwind’s research capabilities with Pfizer’s commercial infrastructure. He stated that the partnership seeks to “fully integrate Sciwind Biosciences’ innovative scientific achievements with Pfizer China’s best-in-class commercialization capabilities to accelerate the commercialization of ecnoglutide.”⁵

From Pfizer’s perspective, the partnership aligns with a broader push to strengthen its position in metabolic disease therapies. Alexandre de Germay, chief international commercial officer, executive vice president, Pfizer, said in the release that the collaboration “represents another solid step to advance Pfizer’s global strategy in the metabolic field and reflects our ambition to become a leader in the next generation of chronic weight management therapies.”⁵

Taken together, the February commercialization partnership and the March regulatory approval illustrate how biopharmaceutical companies are increasingly combining innovative discovery platforms with large-pharma commercialization networks to accelerate market entry.

For larger pharmaceutical companies, the collaboration demonstrates continued interest in licensing regional innovation to strengthen global metabolic disease pipelines.
