Basel's Innovation Ecosystem Fuels New Immune Engineering Institute

BIIE CEO Dr Stephen Wilson explains why Basel's condensed innovation ecosystem was chosen for the institute’s translational research mission.

Stephen Wilson, PhD, CEO and executive Director, Botnar Institute of Immune Engineering (BIIE), discusses the strategic reasoning behind establishing the institute’s new research facility on the Switzerland Innovation Park Main Campus, housed within the Basel Area Life Sciences Supercluster in Basel, Switzerland, during an interview with BioPharm International®. Dr Wilson also discusses the ecosystem factors that he deems essential to translational immune engineering research.

Dr Wilson, an immunologist by training, says the site selection process was a bottom-up decision informed by what BIIE was trying to accomplish rather than an existing regional commitment. He emphasizes that Basel's long-established biomedical innovation ecosystem, combined with a strategic academic partnership with ETH Zurich, a public university, gave BIIE a head start ahead of its planned move into Basel's Innovation Park.

How would Basel's innovation ecosystem support a new immune engineering research institute?

Dr Wilson explains that BIIE combines academic discovery work with a consistent focus on translation, with particular attention to the needs of children and adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. This translational focus is essential given that immune engineering as a scientific field is still evolving and that no single organization can independently manage every step of the translation process. He notes the Innovation Park's mix of research institutes, universities, entrepreneurial companies, and large pharmaceutical organizations—all of which provide the ecosystem components necessary for that translational work.

"You have very close ties between many organizations across the different discovery and industry areas, but it also is feature-complete," Dr Wilson says, describing what he calls Basel's condensed but comprehensive innovation landscape.

Dr Wilson also emphasizes how Basel offers access to highly qualified local professionals as well as international scientists recruited by regional institutions. Combined with a favorable quality of life for researchers relocating from other countries, these factors collectively support BIIE's goal of reaching global research and industry partners from a single location.
