Roslin Institute is one of the world's leading centers for research on farm and other animals. It has internationally recognized programs in molecular and quantitative genetics, genomics, early development, reproduction, and animal behavior and welfare, and it has pioneered methods for the genetic modification and cloning of farm animals. In recent years, the institute also initiated a major new program in human stem cell research.

Roslin Institute's world-class research adds value for its commercial partners. Roslin has always worked closely with industry - first with the agricultural industry and now increasingly with biomedical companies. As agriculture and science have changed dramatically, Roslin Institute has evolved from a traditional agricultural research organization to a leading international research institute in the biotechnology of farm and other animals.

John Clark, recently appointed director of Roslin Institute, is an innovative and entrepreneurial scientist. He has extensive experience in knowledge transfer, having successfully founded three spin-off companies from Roslin. Clark's research on transgenic sheep marked a breakthrough in generating human therapeutic proteins in milk. He pioneered the development of transgenic livestock at Roslin Institute, oversaw the establishment of Roslin's research program on human embryonic stem cells, and initiated the creation of the Scottish Stem Cell Network.

More than 300 staff, students, and visiting scientists work at Roslin Institute on a wide range of disciplines including molecular and cell biology, quantitative genetics, endocrinology, developmental biology, animal behavior, and nutrition. The institute features excellent facilities for research on all the main farm animal and laboratory species.
