Market Opportunities to be Explored at CPhI Japan

Generic drugs, market access, and foreign manufacturing are conference topics at CPhI Japan 2016.

CPhI Japan, scheduled for April 20–22, 2016, at the Big Sight Exhibition Centre, Tokyo, will mark its 15th year with exhibits and conferences that examine the current and evolving state of the world’s second largest pharmaceutical market. The event is co-located with ICSE, BioPh, InnoPack, and P-MEC in conjunction with LABWorld.

With an aging population, the Japanese government is pursuing cost-saving measures including greater use of generic drugs. A health technology assessment-expected to be implemented in 2016-is designed to restrict market access to pharma companies entering products that do not have clear cost efficient or innovative therapy benefits, according to a 2014 Deloitte report, 2015 Life Sciences Outlook – Japan. Historically, the Japanese market has been quite insular and has been resistant to erosion from lower cost generic imports. However, the government’s decision to raise the target for generic use from 60% by the end of April 2018 to 80% by April 2021, means the potential for imports has never been higher, CPhI reports.

CPhI Japan will offer free seminars and paid conference sessions on industry topics that offer insight into the Japanese pharma industry. More than 9000 pharma professionals attend the seminars every year, the organizers report. A networking session for female executives is designed to celebrate female leadership and encourage empowerment within the Japanese industry.

Sessions include: the development and approval review of new drugs in Japan; research and development of innovative drugs and medical devices; preparing for an FDA foreign drug inspection and data integrity; conditions for foreign pharmaceutical industry to contribute to Japanese patients, the market, and economy; and commercialization of innovative biologics.

Attendees can schedule meetings with exhibitors through a buyer appointment system, enabling them to pre-plan their appointments find companies that best match their business needs.

CPhI Japan is organized by UBM EMEA. Pharmaceutical Technology is part of UBM Americas.
