The network aims to provide the interdisciplinary activities to support the translation of scientific expertise into therapeutic benefits for patients and economic strength for Scotland. The company has a $3 million funding commitment from Scottish Enterprise.

Nexxus, the West of Scotland BioScience Network, was launched in September 2003 to provide a connection (a "nexus") across all elements of the West of Scotland life sciences community. It promotes and supports research excellence, innovation and knowledge transfer within the life sciences community in the West of Scotland. It does this by a variety of means, including advertising in relevant media, issuing press releases related to the community, producing case studies and other marketing material for display and distribution as appropriate, and organizing a range of different networking events to attract a wide audience.
